It's been a fabulous weekend so far! Sometimes the scheduling comes together and one can get a real sense of the vital artistic and cultural communities that are thriving in this moment. Thursday was the "Laureates Night" with SF Poet Laureate Alejandro Murguia and California Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera performing to sold out houses at the SFJazz Center Poetry Festival (I was performing with Juan with Melody Takata, Jimmy Biala, John-Carlos Perea, Alejandro was accompanied by the inimitable "Dr. Loco" Jose B. Cuellar!). Friday afternoon I helped Melody of China Artistic Director Yangqin Zhao do a music demonstration with the Youth Mojo group at the Chinese Progressive Association organized by Emily Ja-ming Lee and the staff there. Then attending with partner in crime Jon Jang last night the powerfully moving performance by the Marcus Shelby Orchestra in Marcus' collaboration with Flo Oy Wong entitled Gwah Gai (you can see the final performance tonight!) produced and presented by Vinay Patel and the Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center at ODC Theater. And today capping it off at the Chinese Historical Society America Museum for the successful launch of yet another CHSA publication "Wing Nien Brand" with authors Connie Young Yu and Effie Hall Dilworth . Whew! Time for rest and reflection after being a part of all of this activity.
